Eight-year-old Ashley Maxon was attacked by a dog while visiting a neighbor's home last week and the incident unveiled a history of attacks involving the same dog.
Ashley's mother, Julie Maxon says, "It just went after her. I tried to pull the dog off and Ashley went up like this and it got her arm."
Ashley says, "I didn't hear him. He wasn't growling. I didn't hear feet on floor -- nothing. I turned around and there he was."
Ashley suffered bites to her eye and arm requiring a few dozen stitches.
"It was pretty painful," she said.
Ozzie, a rottweiler, ended up in quarantine at the Humane Society.
Julie says, "I don't think the dog should be back in the neighborhood at all, for the safety of even their own family."
After Ashley was injured other neighbors came forward to say Ozzie had also bitten them.
Julie says, "This wouldn't have happened if they filed reports. It never would have happened."
Animal control experts say coming forward is key to making sure a dangerous dog doesn't continue to hurt others.
The Humane Society's Pam Wiese says, "We tell everyone who has a bite that breaks the skin to report it. It's the best way to ensure public safety."
Ozzie owners say they plan to have the dog put down.
Ashley's mother says that's the right decision and it will allow her to help Ashley move forward.
"She can't even go outside and ride her bike," Julie says. "She's afraid of dogs now and we have two dogs we have down in the basement. So, I mean, it's not fair."
If Ozzie would have bitten Ashley out on the street or in her backyard it's likely he would have been declared "a vicious dog" and euthanized. Since the attack happened on his turf, in his home, the issue is in a gray area. Nebraska law allows dogs to protect their turf. But again, the dog's owners say Ozzie will be put down.
