Last Defense Witness Called In Trial Of Accused Coach Killer

Defense lawyers called their last witnesses Monday in the first-degree murder trial of Mark Becker, charged with killing Iowa high schol football coach Ed Thomas last June.

The final defense witnesses called were Cleveland psychiatrist Dr. Phillip Resnick and Fort Dodge psychologist Dan Rogers.

Resnick testified that the 24-year-old Becker is a paranoid schizophrenic who believed Thomas was "literally Satan" and didn't understand the consequences of shooting him at Aplington-Parkersburg High School.

Fort Dodge psychologist Dan Rogers testified Becker had hallucinations and believed Thomas was the source of voices he was hearing.

Assistant Iowa Attorney General Scott Brown says he'll call one more witness Tuesday, then give closing arguments Wednesday morning. Defense lawyers then will likely give final arguments.

Becker has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
