A baby delivered prematurely by emergency Caesarean section died early Sunday after the mother was involved in a head-on crash.
Police said a car going northbound on 30th Street near Bondesson was hit by a pickup driving on the wrong side of the road around 12:15 a.m. A passenger in the car, 18-year-old Lucia Turco of Omaha who was eight-months pregnant, suffered a broken leg. Due to complications, doctors performed the emergency C-section, but the little girl didn't survive. The 18-year-old driver of the car, Turco's boyfriend and the baby's father, had some cuts and needed stitches.
Charges are pending against the driver of the truck, 21-year-old Kevin Mattini of Omaha, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police said he appeared to have been drinking. Two passengers in the pickup were also hurt. A 21-year-old man sustained a fractured vertebra in his neck and a 21-year-old woman was being treated for a possible concussion.
Those close to the mother said they were planning a baby shower. Now they are planning a funeral. On a quiet street where everyone grew up together, they were ready to welcome the next generation. "The whole neighborhood was looking for this little girl, looking of this little girl coming," said friend Raquel DeLeon, who was to be godmother to baby Lilian Eve. "It's very hard. Just imagine your best friend going through so much pain that you couldn't even imagine, in the hospital with IVs in her, her face all swollen and no baby, no baby." Turco will be in the hospital for several days.
DeLeon was most upset when she was learned alcohol charges were pending against the people who caused the accident. She wants them to know the emotional pain the wreck has caused, to friends, family, and an expectant mother. "It touched me. It touched home. It's going to change the way I feel about drinking."
