A Nebraska woman whose pregnancy at 13 led to prison for her then-22-year-old husband says she's happy with her choices.
Five years after the pregnancy and ensuing criminal case, Crystal Koso, now 19, is still married to Matthew Koso. They live in Falls City and are awaiting the birth of a fourth child. One was fathered by another man while Matthew Koso was locked up after being convicted of having sex with a child.
The couple drew national attention in 2005 after Crystal Koso became pregnant and they headed to Hiawatha, Kan., to marry with her mother's permission. At the time, such a marriage was allowed with parental consent. The case led Kansas lawmakers in 2006 to set a minimum marriage age of 15.
Nebraska allows people as young as 17 to marry if they have parental consent.
Matthew Koso served 15 months in prison and had to register as a sex offender.
The years since haven't been easy. The couple learned in December that their oldest child, Sami, 4, has cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that causes mucous to build up in the lungs. Sami is a "pistol," Crystal Koso said.
They live in a home owned by his parents that has a view of the Richardson County Courthouse. Both are unemployed. "Who's going to hire a felon?" he said.
Looking back, Matthew Koso said the whole experience, particularly that day in February 2006 when he was sentenced, has made his family stronger.
"I know it probably was one of the most tragic days in my life," he says now. "But yet it was one of the biggest learning days I ever had, too."
