A University of South Dakota student from Nebraska has died of bacterial meningitis.

Hospital officials in Sioux City, Iowa, identified the student as 20-year-old Janell Burbach.

She was a music major from Hartington, Nebraska.

Burbach died Wednesday at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City a day after she was flown to the hospital.

The Sioux City Argus Leader reported Friday that Burbach had started working at a Girl Scout camp near Sioux City before she learned of the infection.

Campers and camp staff were vaccinated and officials say the camp will reopen Sunday after a sanitization procedure.

The disease is a bacterial infection of the fluid in the spinal cord and can be spread through respiratory and throat secretions
