Plowed Streets Uncover Other Driving Obstacles

Over the next few days the city will begin turning its attention to something left behind as the streets are cleared, something besides the snow.
Drivers had two things on their mind Monday, work and how to get there. “I was going out for gas." Lisa Drake was one of many drivers noticing road hazards in the blizzard's aftermath.
“The streets aren't plowed wide enough yet, but we just had a big blizzard so what do you expect?”
On a drive around town, narrowed streets weren't the only apparent hazards. As the pavement begins to surface as snowplows clear the way, other problems surface also. One is the line-of-sight problems the huge mounds of snow are creating for drivers at intersections and the other is potholes.
That’s a problem Omaha Public Works’ Fred Thole says they worked on before the latest storm hit. “They were actually on our radar before the snow hit. That's the best thing about the snow is that it filled them up."
He says the best advice for narrowed streets, sight obstructions and for potholes is to make sure you leave extra time for your commute. Drivers appear to be paying attention.
“You just have to patient with everyone, give them space and you'll be fine," said Philip O’Brien of Omaha.
Public Works will continue to clear the snow, but it may be days before your regular commute to work feels anything close to regular. Thole says the line-of-sight issues are a major one all around town. He says that's the next big problem Public Works intends to tackle.
