Starting Monday, Nebraska made the H1N1 vaccine available to everyone. Previously, only members of high-risk groups could receive the vaccine.
In Iowa, vaccination was opened to the general public on December 14th.
Nebraska has been vaccinating people through a combination of public health clinics and by distributing the vaccine to health care providers.
Midwest Minor Medical is one of those providers. Monday morning it’s location at 84th and Q streets in Omaha had about 50 doses on hand. By midday another 200 doses were in stock.
Dr. Robert Byrnes says it’s important for people to get immunized against H1N1. The idea that the threat from the virus is over is incorrect.
“It is still out there," says Dr. Byrnes. "I diagnosed two cases yesterday and it’s not as prevalent as it was, but it certainly could have a resurgence so I strongly recommend people get the vaccinations.”
Iowa has not given vaccine to individual doctors. Instead it is distributing the vaccine through clinics.
