For many homeless people, the loss of a roof over their head came very quickly. And the battle to escape homelessness can be a long and difficult one. But there is a new organization bringing some new ideas to the fight against homelessness in Omaha.
The program is called Project Homeless No More. They currently have one three bedroom apartment that gets homeless individuals off the streets and on the path to having their own place.
Michael Parker has been at the apartment for less than a week. “It just takes a great burden off of my shoulders and a lot of stress. It's a great stress relief for me. It feels great. It's a great blessing. It's only because of God's grace and mercy and help from Project Homeless No More, that that's all being made possible.”
To be eligible for the program a person must have some sort of income, but not enough to afford their own place to stay. They also must have the initiative it takes to eventually be independent. Once in the program, residents have a room of their own and support from staff members who have been homeless themselves and know what it takes to get off the street.
“They took me off the street immediately,” says new resident Sean Blake, “and were able to find a place for me immediately in a time of extreme need for myself personally and allow me a place to sit and start forming a plan for what is next.”
A tough step in the process of getting off the streets and into a home or apartment is finding a willing landlord. That can be tough when living at a shelter.
“Sometimes, even at a homeless shelter,” says Blake, “you won't ever be considered by a landlord for residency if you tell them that's where you reside.”
Project Homeless No More plans to open another home in Omaha in the next few weeks. But they need furniture and other donations to make it happen.
