A 13-year-old boy was seriously injured in a school gym Thursday. A piece of metal fell from the ceiling hitting him in the head.
It happened at McMillan Magnet Center near 38th & Redick Avenue. A spokesperson for Omaha Public Schools, Luanne Nelson, says the metal was part of a "cradle" that holds a wrestling mat near the ceiling of the gymnasium.
Nelson tells Channel 6 News the boy is in stable condition. His name has not been released.
A classmate in the gym at the time identifies him as 8th grader Jawuan Gaines.
The student also told Channel 6 News that in between class periods on Thursday, Gaines was playing basketball and went over to an area of the gym separated by partitions to retrieve a ball when the cradle fell on him.
