Pottawattamie County authorities Wednesday identified the man who was struck and killed last week as he walked along Highway 59 in Oakland, Iowa.
Sheriff Jeff Danker says the victim was 26-year-old Mario Bernabe Tomas, of Omaha. According to sheriff's deputies, Bernabe Tomas was struck the night of November 24th by a car driven by 19-year-old Molly Hummel of Oakland.
Hummel was northbound on Highway 59 when she noticed a man having trouble running. She claims as she neared the man, he veered onto the road and fell in front of her auto. Bernabe Tomas died before he could be transported to a hospital.
An autopsy is being performed to determine why he collapsed. Danker says Hummel will not face charges in connection with the incident.
