Policy Leaves Owners Feeling Trashed
They pay taxes to the city of Omaha but don't get all the services other property owners receive. That's why several downtown condominium owners are complaining about unfair treatment.

They pay taxes to the city of Omaha but don't get all the services other property owners receive.

That's why several downtown condominium owners are complaining about unfair treatment.

Six On Your Side investigated if their claim was truth or trash.

It costs condo owner Mark Ford about $45 a year to take out his trash.

A waste of money, he says, because he already pays for city garbage removal through his property taxes.

Ford says, "We shouldn't have to go out and get a private contractor to come in here and do what we pay them to do."

The city's contract with Deffenbaugh calls for curbside residential pickup.

Smaller condo complexes can put out a maximum 10 trash cans.

But the 70 property owners in the Beebee Runyan building funnel their trash into one dumpster the city's trash hauler won't touch.

"The contracts we have with Deffenbaugh are all geared towards people collecting from garbage cans. It's a different type of equipment. A different truck collects from that. It's just an entirely different scope of service than what we provide," says Marty Grate of the Omaha Public Works department.

So the condominium owners association must pay a private trash hauler $3,600 a year.

"Those aren't incentives that encourage folks to give up homes in West Omaha and move downtown to enjoy what's here," says Lou Harrison.

But the city public works department says condo dumpsters can't be squeezed into the city's contract with Deffenbaugh.

It would require a new separate contract costing more tax dollars something the city might not be able to afford for a year or more.

"With the new trend toward condos, their popularity in the community, it's an issue that's not going away."

Downtown condos in the Runyan building range in price from $250,000 to $1,000,000 so owners say they pay their share of taxes.

Though an extra $45 a year for private trash service isn't a lot, it's money the condo owners don't like throwing away.

"It's a question of fairness that's what this whole issue is about."

The city's contract with Deffenbaugh will last several more years.

Councilman Jim Vokal promises to find a way to amend the contract for the increasing number of condo owners.

Again, their property taxes are supposed to provide trash pickup.
