Truck Crashes Through House

A Bellevue man is facing a number of charges after crashing his pickup truck into a West Omaha home late Monday night. The vehicle went completely through the house before coming to a stop as it crashed through the back wall.

The driver is identified as 23-year-old David W. Nelson. He is charged with Driving Under the Influence, Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident and Willful Reckless Driving.

Investigators estimate that Nelson's truck was traveling 64 miles-per-hour when it slammed into Mike Mossage's home near 145th and Corby at 11:40 p.m.

Mr. Mossage says, "My wife and I and our two-year-old daughter were sleeping and we heard this explosion. My wife thought maybe a tornado had hit the house because that makes a whistling sound sometimes."

One floor below, the truck traveled through the front wall, through the dining room, into the kitchen and crashed through the back wall onto a deck.

Authorities say that David Nelson left the scene but was subdued by neighbors.

Mossage says, "The driver was able to make it a ways and a gentleman I have not met before was able to tackle him and hold him 'til authorities arrived."

Neighbors Timothy Hubschman and Kevin Hoffman detained Nelson until police got to the home.

There were two passengers in the pickup truck. They are identified as Nelson's twin brother Dustin, also of Bellevue, and 27-year-old Phillip Snider of Omaha.

Mike Mossage says it will take three months to repair the damage to the house but he is just grateful that his family is safe.

"We're all OK," he says. "That's the thing I'm really concerned about. It's probably going to take awhile, two to three months to get my house rebuilt but I've got my family and I guess that's what matters."

Neighbor David Turner says, “They’re very lucky, because from what I understand they were already in bed upstairs. If it was a couple hours earlier, who knows. They could’ve been downstairs watching TV."
