Pottawattamie County Sheriff's deputies and the Iowa State Patrol were called to a crash on northbound Interstate 29 Friday afternoon. There were reports of a person trapped inside, the guardrail was impaled through the van.
Witnesses said the driver attempted to pass a car in the lefthand lane, when he veered into the median, and struck the guardrail. Witnesses say he did not try to stop or swerve.
The 79-year-old driver told investigators the last thing he remembered was trying to pass a car. A sergent with the Iowa State Patrol says a medical condition may have led to the crash.
Two women were passengers in the handicap-accessible van at the time. Both were in the back seat. One woman, who was wheelchair bound, was trapped under the guardrail and taken by medical helicopter to Nebraska Medical Center. Deputies on scene say she was alert and talking when she was transported.
The driver and the other passenger were taken to the hospital by ambulance with minor injuries.
