A Bellevue family awoke Sunday morning to find their house on fire and the homeowner has reason to believe it was no accident.

“I was dozing in and out about 2 o’clock and I heard a loud noise, the neighbors all heard it,” said Jim Uhlenkamp. "I didn't hear it as loud as they did. They say the windows shook it was so loud.”

Moments later the smoke detectors went off. "I went to the back hall in the kitchen. I couldn't see anything 'cause it was so smoky.”

By daylight the smoke had cleared at 18th Avenue and Hancock. "It seemed like it took 20 minutes for them, to the houses back and by the then it was all billowing out the windows, the flames. The whole house is smoke damaged and the firemen worked with chainsaws and axes for quite a long time.”

After living here for 13 years, there is a lot that's been lost. There are blackened walls around every corner, cabinets and appliances have been replaced by ashes and debris. “So every single room, the walls have sweated and peeled.”

No one was injured. "It's devastating and I don't think it's sunk in yet.”

While he doesn't know what started the fire, Uhlenkamp says there are clues. "He said there was no doubt in his mind it was arson, somebody set it.”

Now Uhlenkamp is left to pick up the pieces and left to ponder what’s next. “I think you really don't think about that, I mean today is the first day, don't know what to think.”

The family said one of their dogs is at the veterinarian for treatment. As for the home, their insurance company says the structure is still sound and the home will be rebuilt. For now, the insurance company will house the family in a hotel for the next week.
