Military families got a special treat Sunday, thanks to the Papillion-La Vista School District. A luncheon was served for those who defend our nation.
There was entertainment, games and activities for the kids and of course plenty of food for everybody at Papillion-La Vista South High School. "I think there's a lot of things to celebrate in life and this is one of them and the community coming together, I think it's a wonderful celebration,” said Vincent Zaleski of the U.S. Air Force.
The Papillion-La Vista School District Festival and Lunch, sponsored by Hy-Vee and SAC Federal Credit Union, was for military families to thank them for the many sacrifices they make and the service they provide.
“I think it's a good way to appreciate what they have done for us and it's fun seeing all the kids come out, too,” said student volunteer Toni Blackwell.
While it was a festive event, many were still feeling the effect of last Thursday’s mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas where 13 solders lost their lives.
While the children could lose themselves in all the entertainment, for the parents, their thoughts haven't strayed very far from the tragedy at Fort Hood. Paula Johnson, retired from the Air Force, says there's a bond all servicemen and servicewomen share.
"I'm sad, just shock and immediately tears came to my eyes, like now.”
"It's tough to go through that, I can't imagine the pain they're suffering right now,” said Ron Marrajuo, also retired from the Air Force.
Luis Alozada of the Air Force said the base shooting makes events like the festival and lunch even more appreciated.
"You know we have folks out there everyday giving their lives and to give folks, especially who may be here without a loved one right now, the chance to come out and enjoy themselves, I think it's great.”
