An elderly victim of identity theft will never know who stole his wallet and went on a spending spree. The 83-year-old man died before the case could be solved.

The man suspected of identity theft doesn’t fit the part. Papillion Police Detective Jessica Moore says the suspect, possibly in his 50s, is different than most credit card theft suspects. “This man is dressed in khakis, polo shirt and has a Titlist hat on like he’s coming from the golf course.”

Detective Moore says it’s more likely the suspect came from a waiting area in a medical building. The 83-year-old victim reported his wallet missing after a doctor’s visit.

“Maybe he specifically preyed on an elderly male. It’s possible the male left his wallet there, but I’d guess the suspect was there searching for a victim.”

The suspect was caught on security camera using the elderly victim’s credit card and signing the man’s name to purchase $6,500 in merchandise. That includes $500 worth of gift cards at Walgreens, $3,000 in gift cards at Lowes and a laptop and camera at Best Buy. At all three Papillion stores the suspect parked his car out of view of outside security cameras.

“My father unfortunately was carrying multiple credit cards," said his daughter, who asked not to be identified. "I told him he shouldn’t do that. The day after, he was trying to remember how many credit cards he had with him."

Sadly, the widower died not long after his wallet was stolen. However, the theft investigation is still active.

Anyone with information about the theft and subsequent crimes is asked to call Papillion Police Detective Moore at 597-2053. Judging by his actions, police believe the suspect will strike again.
