An Iowa soldier who arrived at Fort Hood in Texas just this week is among the soldiers wounded in Thursday's shooting rampage that left 13 dead.
Jerry Nelson of Des Moines says his daughter, 27-year-old Staff Sgt. Joy Clark, was in the Soldier Readiness Center when a gunman came in and opened fire.
Nelson says a soldier in front his daughter was shot. He says she "peeled off her jacket to cover the soldier" and that's when she was shot in her left forearm.
Nelson, who spoke with his daughter on Friday, says she is in stable condition and is awaiting surgery.
Clark arrived in Fort Hood on Tuesday for additional training with a medical team. She was scheduled to be deployed overseas later this year.
Clark was formerly based in Des Moines with an U.S. Army Reserve
unit.
Meanwhile, Gov. Dave Heineman is reminding Nebraskans to fly state and U.S. flags at half-staff in tribute to the victims of the Fort Hood mass shooting.
President Barack Obama issued a proclamation Friday calling for flags to be flown at half-staff until sunset on Tuesday. Thursday's shooting left 13 dead and 43 wounded.
Among the injured was the suspected shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who remained hospitalized in a coma Friday.
