Former Bully Reaches Out To Students
Urges them to walk in other people's shoes

It's been a problem in schools for generations, but bullying now seems to be as big a problem as ever. While many districts have put rules and safeguards in place to stop it, an Omaha-based program is going after the source of the problem.

During an assembly Thursday at Omaha South High School, Mike Donahue shared his story.

“My family was messed up. I didn't know what to do so I covered it up. I covered it up with drugs, I covered it up with alcohol. I covered it up with everything I could to make that pain go away.”

Another way he would cope was to be a bully. “Instead of going yeah, I need help, I walked in acting tough and acting like nothing bothered me and then I found some kid that I could socially dominate and I would make that kid feel stupid and make me feel good for about 10 seconds.”

Donahue is part of R5 Productions, a group that speaks to students all over the country about bullying and school violence. While encouraging students to not give up on their dreams, he also told them to consider what others are going through, to walk in other people's shoes.

R5 Productions travels to more than 200 schools every year reaching more than 200,000 students in 29 states.
