Iowa Buses Soon To Have Alarms To Warn Pedestrians
City buses in Des Moines are now sounding alarms. The alarms are part of the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority's latest effort to keep pedestrians safe while buses navigate the streets.
The electronic noisemakers, which cost $23 each, are similar to those used in heavy equipment. The alarm is hooked up to the turn signal on the bus so that it goes off when the driver turns a corner.
The alarms replace a turn-and-honk policy the transit authority put into place in July after a pedestrian was hit by a bus that was turning left in downtown Des Moines. The accident was the seventh involving a city bus and pedestrian in two years.
DART spokesman Michael Kaiser says they hope to prevent such accidents in the future.
