No doubt, parents will be monitoring the forecast for Saturday. Thousands of ghosts and goblins and other characters will be flooding the sidewalks and overheating the doorbells. Law enforcement wants parents to know they're watching too.
"We probably should have been more scared years ago," says Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis who remembers when children went trick-or-tricking and parents didn't know where the sex offenders lived. "We routinely check sex offenders but on Halloween, we have some extra people out and some of the more noted sex offenders. We do keep an eye on that evening.”
These days, parents can go to the Nebraska or Iowa sex offender registries, type in a zip code and know exactly who lives where.
"I haven't got to that point but if they were older and going by themselves I probably would," says Amy Eldifrawi who recently moved to Omaha from Chicago with her family. "But since we'll be there with them and watching I don't feel the need yet."
Sarpy County monitors 25-30 sex offenders who are high risk to re-offend. Douglas County deputies keep tabs on 385 sex offenders who are a high-risk to re-offend. Sheriff Tim Dunning says that when it comes to monitoring sex offenders, they treat everyday as if it were Halloween.
We found sex offenders in nearly every zip code. "I don’t think we can say it enough to encourage people to go to the websites and look at the sex offender registry," says Sheriff Davis.
