650 Participate In Winterfest Ice Fishing Derby

The sun was shining, the sky was blue and the temperature was cold. Those factors made for great conditions for ice fishing and that’s just what many people did this Saturday morning at Lake Manawa State Park in Council Bluffs.

Henry Petersen was out fishing with his dad and friends. “Just come out here with a bunch of friends and have a bunch of fun."

Right next to them was Jeff Mutum and his boys. They were some of the 650 people who hit the ice for the Winterfest Ice Fishing Derby. The Mutums had only caught one fish, but were hoping for more, especially because it could mean they win one of the day’s prizes. “We are just trying to catch a big fish for $25,000,” said Mutum. Also, bragging rights.

It all started at 7 a.m. Many drilled their fishing hole about seven to eight inches down and then it was a waiting game.

Rick Faust used sonar equipment to try and help catch a big one, but he said it had been a pretty slow day. Even so, his spirits were still high. “The worst day of fishing is better than the best day of work."

Kevin Rens and his 5-year-old son Parker were also looking to get a fish, but they had a backup plan just in case. They had a big fake fish, but weren't going to enter it in the contest.

In the end, everyone considered themselves winners because they had a great time spending the day with each other.
