Inside a Marriott Hotel room just outside of Denver, Colorado, Robert Reams and his family settled in for the perfect August family vacation.

But inside the family's Denver hotel room, the family was not alone.

From a hole nearly invisible to the eye, David Fugate was in the room with the family.

The hole caught the attention of a hotel employee after the family checked out.

"The maintenance people poked a pin in the hole and it poked back. They went and got a knife and cut it open to look inside," says Reams. "When they looked inside the wall they found a camera."

Fugate had been observing the Reams family from an adjacent room using a wireless camera.

"My biggest fear is that my daughters, or their friends, or their finances, will see pictures of them on the internet somewhere," says Reams.

In the two months since, the Reams family went about their lives in Papillion oblivious to what was happening in the state next door.

The family was oblivious because they didn't learn about the crime until they got a letter in early October from the Arapahoe County District Attorney's Office.

Fugate was charged with a felony for the crime but he was able to plea bargain to a misdemeanor. He's serving two years probation. The family says there were never consulted regarding plea negotiations.

"He got off for nothing and we have to pay for it the rest of our lives," says Reams.

In Nebraska, Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine says the offense would be a class two misdemeanor.

Reams says he will work to make the laws stronger.

Friday, Sage Hospitality, which owns the hotel in Denver issued this statement to Channel Six News:

As a representative of the TPS hotel I assure you it is of the utmost importance that all our guests are provided safety and privacy. If a situation occurs that comprises the security of our guests, we proactively involve the proper authorities. At the TownePlace Suites, it is our goal to make sure that each guest has a safe and peaceful guest experience.

It is important to know the Reams were victims. The hotel was also a victim and this very antiquated law needs to be changed so we are able to better protect our guests privacy. Being in Colorado I committed to do my part to change this law in Colorado.
