Omaha's downtown post office has been processing 1,000 packages a day that contain lids from peanut butter jars. They're all headed to ConAgra in the aftermath of a recall.

The Food and Drug Administration has linked certain Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter to salmonella. The FDA also reports that since August, more than 300 people have become sick and 51 were hospitalized.

The contaminated jars of peanut butter were all processed at a ConAgra plant in Syracuse, Georgia. The company recalled all varieties of Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Great Value Peanut Butter beginning with product code 2111.

Customers were told to send the lids to ConAgra for refunds.

Roger Humphries, with the U.S. Post Office says, "They're using priority mail, so they're using all different methods but they are getting the lids back to ConAgra and letting them know that they purchased their items and they're hoping ConAgra will take care of it."

A ConAgra spokesperson says the company will reimburse customers for the cost of postage as well as the cost estimated cost of the product.

Along with metro grocery shoppers, the Omaha Food Bank has been scanning for the 2111 code flagged in the recall. Every item is sorted by volunteers and entered in a computer system.

The Food Bank's Don Schnitzel says that helped the organization remove two cases of Peter Pan peanut butter.

"We pulled it off the shelves immediately and destroyed them so that there's no chance of them getting out," he said.

The peanut butter also came off store shelves.

Wohlner's Grocery manager Mike Schwartz says, "ConAgra came in and they bought everything we had on the shelf and paid us cash on the spot."

As for the mail-in refund campaign, ConAgra's news release advises, "consumers can send their Peter Pan Peanut Butter or Great Value Peanut Butter lid or label with the product code beginning with 2111 to ConAgra Foods along with their name and mailing address for a full refund. That mailing address is ConAgra Foods, P.O. Box 3768, Omaha, NE 68103. It is not necessary to send samples of peanut butter through the mail."

The post office suggests using padded envelopes. Envelopes without that padding can tear in mail processing machines.
