Teens Face Charges After Fight

Dozens of teens face charges following an after-school fistfight involving rival high schools.

What's intriguging about this story is *how* authorities know who to charge.

The fight happened last November near the Missouri River bridge at Blair.

The incident was caught on videotape.

The Harrison County Attorney isn't ready to make it public but she wants the parents of some 70 teenagers to watch it

"I think I'd be upset with my kids that's for sure," says Jennifer Mumm, Harrison County Attorney.

Last November in a public access area on the Iowa side of the Missouri River two Blair teenagers had a fist fight with about 70 friends and classmates gathered around them.

Mumm says, "Certainly encouraging, they're encouraging the fighting. They're encouraging it to escalate"

One teenager videotaped the fight and spectators but left his camera at a Blair restaurant by mistake.

it ended up in the hands of Harrison County authorities who, with Blair school officials, identified those on the tape.

The two fighters are charged with disorderly conduct and 70 on lookers face unlawful assembly.

The mother of two boys, who asked not to be identified, says her sons were just spectators.

"I think this is going too far to send a message. If the parents would just have been notified their kid’s in attendance and let parents deal with it."

"Violence shouldn't be entertainment when you're pushing for more violence"

"Definitely I'm not proud they were there. I'm ashamed they were there but I don't think standing there doing nothing is worth something on their record when they're getting ready to go off to college "

The sheriff in Harrison County, Iowa, is concerned a circular parking spot under the Blair bridge has become a ring for ultimate fighting involving young people on both sides of the river. So he's asked the DNR to consider blocking the area off from public access.

In a letter to the state, the sheriff says in 25 years there have been two murders, two suicides and numerous other disturbances at the parking area.

It's also a good place for fishing and bird watching so alternatives to closing it are being explored.

The Harrison County sheriff has cited the two students who were fighting for disorderly conduct.

The others who watched face charges of unlawful assembly.

Eleven are charged as adults. The others are charged as juveniles.

Each has been sent a summons to appear in court over the next couple of weeks.

The charges are misdemeanors carrying up to 30 days in jail and a $600 fine.
