Animal Neglect Charges

33 misdemeanors filed against a 51-year-old former Plattsmouth woman. She was arraigned on animal cruelty charges Tuesday in Cass County Court.

The Cassgram reports court documents show Cheryl L. Lillie, who has a Bellevue address listed on court records, pleaded not guilty to all 33 counts of the same charge: Abandonment or Cruel Neglect of an Animal.

On May 29th, local police, sheriff’s deputies, the animal control officer and the city zoning inspector found “unsanitary” living conditions at 613 2nd Avenue in Plattsmouth. The house was full of animals (33 cats, 3 ferrets, 2 dogs, and a number of mice) in addition to an infestation of insects. The five people residing there were removed, including one in very poor health, and the house was tagged as temporarily uninhabitable. All animals were removed, 11 of which had to be put down shortly afterward.
As for the others, each has been nursed back to health and all but six have been adopted, reports Humane Officer Sue Baker. That even includes two litters of kittens (five and six) born after they were placed in the animal shelter.

“It took a lot of medications, a lot of volunteers and a lot of donations,” said Baker, who admitted she had some sleepless nights in helping with their care.

A WOWT-TV news report on the incident said Lillie had previously been named in an animal cruelty investigation in Iowa.
Lillie’s Cass County case is set for a pre-trial conference in November. She is free on a $5,000 signature bond.

Each Class I Misdemeanor count carries up to one year in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both upon conviction.
