Nebraska Farm & Ranch Spending Increases

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says farmers and ranchers in Nebraska spent 5 percent more in 2008 than the previous year.

Total spending for the year was $16.6 billion. Expenditures on fertilizer increased the most, shooting up 28 percent.

Spending on feed increased 18 percent over 2007.

The figures were collected from farmers and ranchers surveyed by the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

On average, each farm and ranch spent more than $350,633 last year, up from more than $332,914 in 2007.

The biggest portion of that spending was on livestock, with spending averaging about nearly $82,280 per operation
