A man was rescued from the Missouri River Sunday afternoon after an apparent suicide attempt. Police say he is alive and conscious.
A witness told Channel 6 News he was driving west on the I-480 bridge when he saw a man dressed in black walking on the north side of the bridge around 4 p.m.
As he passed, the witness said the man looked over the barrier and "rolled" over the edge.
While police officers from Omaha and Carter Lake scanned the riverbank for any sign of the man, the Council Bluffs Water Rescue Team launched a couple of boats to search the river.
After about 20 minutes, the man was located and pulled from the water.
"Either Douglas County or Council Bluffs boat patrol had rescued him near Ameristar,” said Omaha Police Sgt. Mark Matuza. “We are currently at this time figuring out what the reasons are or why he jumped over the bridge."
His name has not been released. He was taken to the hospital for observation.
