Nebraska officials predict they'll be able to save roughly $500,000 a year by changing what Medicaid recipients use to prove their in the health care program.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services has already begun issuing the new wallet cards that will replace the letters that used to be mailed monthly.

On Aug. 1, Nebraska's 116,000 Medicaid recipients will begin using the new cards, which resemble private health insurance cards.

Unlike the letters, the Medicaid cards will be issued just once and replaced if they are lost.

Medicaid recipients have already been notified about the change.
