It has the making of a Hollywood movie script. A tragedy followed by healing. Now a miracle run by a team honoring a teammate who died in an awful accident.
Mike Matchus and his older brother died in a pickup crash near south Bend several weeks ago. Mikey, as his coach called him played for the Louisville legion team.
A team that coach Monte Daganar says has won just one game the past two years. Not any more. During a recent legion game an opposing team gave the Louisville squad an Angel Trophy in honor of Mikey Matchus.
Since that night Louisville’s senior legion team has won three straight going into the semis of district play tonight in Pawnee City. That includes wins over teams that dominated Lousville earlier in the season.
Coach Daganar says the team and community have rallied around the spirit of "Mikey".
