The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is buying 220 acres north of Lincoln to help protect habitat used by the Salt Creek tiger beetle and other endangered species.

The commission on Friday approved the $979,000 deal. A commission official says a grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and money secured from the Nebraska Environmental Trust helped cover the bulk of the cost. Private conservation group Ducks Unlimited also chipped in $10,000.

The land will be managed by the commission and open to public hunting and wildlife viewing. It is near three other protected saline wetlands.

The Salt Creek tiger beetle was placed on the federal endangered species list in 2005.
