Changes are being made to the way we apply for a driver's license in Nebraska. The new security features take effect Monday, July 20, 2009.
Among the changes, applicant's photos will be taken at the beginning of the process. Once the test is finished and the fee paid, you will be issued a 30-day receipt that looks similiar to a license. The actual license will be printed from a secure location and mailed to you within five to seven business days.
If you are applying for a new license, you will be required to provide one form of U.S. based identification that includes your full legal name.
Those applying for new and renewal licenses will also be required to show two documents as proof of address. One of those can be the renewal notice that is mailed by the DMV. Other documents can include a utility bill, credit card bill, vehicle/voter registrations, insurance policies, or mortgage agreements.
Applicants under 18 must have proof of a parent or guardian's principal address.
Finally, a $2.50 security surcharge will be added to the cost. Officials say the new measures will help prevent identity theft and make it harder for fake IDs to be made.
