A man who was arrested last year for his fourth incident of drunk driving was sentenced Thursday after pleading no contest to leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving. The DUI charge did not stick.

In October 2012, Daniel Beaman, who is now 29 years old, drove onto a stretch of Highway 370 which had been closed due to construction. He crashed into a large piece of construction equipment.

Evidence of the crash was not discovered until hours later. By the time investigators tracked him down, Beaman’s blood-alcohol level was .02. The prosecutor tells Channel 6 News that there was no way to prove he was drinking and driving at the time of the crash.

Beaman was sentenced to 24 months probation, fined $500 and he had his license revoked for one year.

A suspected drunk driver who drove on a closed section of new highway almost came to a dead end. He slammed into the right read end of a parked grader.

The crash happened sometime overnight on highway 370 near Gretna Monday morning. it was not discovered until about 7am when construction workers came to work. They found the smashed SUV empty.

Lt Russ Zeeb said the driver walked about four blocks to his parents home in Gretna. Zeeb said 28 year old Daniel Beaman was cited for suspected DUI. He said the driver was then taken by his mother to a hospital for treatment of a broken hand, broken sternum and possible head injury.

Zeeb said deputies estimated if the SUV had hit the grader a few feet to the left the driver likely would have been killed.

The road grader sustained more than $10,000 damage. The battery from the SUV was found about 75 feet down the new pavement from the crash scene.
