Heavy rain Friday night at one point threatened to delay the Omaha World-Herald's Fireworks Show. The show did go on, however, even though the Royals-Zephyrs game was suspended in the 10th inning with the score tied 2-2.
Although it was not the perfect day for a picnic and fireworks, thousands still turned out to Rosenblatt Stadium.
"How can you not enjoy the Fourth of July in America?" said Mike Sandhoefner. He and his family have been coming to the show for 25 years.
"We've been coming down since the first year they started the fireworks, and we've been coming down and grilling here for the last several with family members. A little wetness isn't going to stop us!"
Behind the scenes, Grucci Fireworks was working to ensure the explosives stay dry. They are covered with plastic and tarps, and the fireworks can be shot through the plastic.
"Safety is our main priority, everybody wants fireworks, everybody likes fireworks, but if somebody gets hurt, it's just not worth it," said Dan Kaiser, of Grucci Fireworkes. This is his 25th year to work the show in Omaha.
Kaiser says the fireworks can go off in a little bit of rain, but anything more severe can cause problems. "A lot of it is you know you can't make a definite decision because the weather around here can change in a moment's notice."
As the rain let up later in the afternoon, more started to gather for the night's festivities.
"It looks like it's clearing off, so hopefully we'll be good until the fireworks are done and then after the fireworks are doen, that's ok, it can rain then." said Kevin Kathka.
He and his family headed into the stadium to watch the Royals game and fireworks, but grabbed a quick bite first. Kim, Kevin's daughter, is ready for the grand finale.
"What I hate about [fireworks] is they're really loud, what I like about them is they're really beautiful colors."
Others were hoping to enjoy the show from further away, across 13th Street.
Mary Lynn Brown and Dan Shallenberger perched on the back of their van, complete with an American flag flying.
"Beautiful fireworks and just a good spot to be real close to them," she said of their parking spot.
"We're not worried about the weather, we're here to see the fireworks, and it's going to go off tonight," said Shallenberger.
They say it's all a part of celebrating the Fourth of July in Nebraska.
Grucci Fireworks has had to delay the show several times over the past 25 years, but they've never canceled. They do have a backup plan each year.
