A 3-year-old girl was briefly hospitalized as a precaution after being rescued from an apartment swimming pool in Omaha Thursday morning.
Little Jessica floated to the deep end of the indoor pool at the Citadel Apartments near 86th and Q streets.
When her mother realized what had happened, she jumped in, but couldn't swim herself. Her two other children started shouting "emergency, emergency." They then ran to where apartment staff were meeting nearby.
Apartment manager Sheryl Fisher Stowe was the first one in the pool to help. “I ran into the pool, took my shoes off, dove in, went into panic mode and got to the mother and baby and she started pulling me under, she was fighting and then Lindsay dove in."
"I dove right in and yelling at Eunis to call 911 and grab the life preserver and we all worked together,” said Lindsay Bockert. “The mom pushed me to the bottom, I touched bottom and pushed back up, grabbed a hold of the baby and went straight for the ladder.”
Sheryl and the mom were still in the water when Sheryl’s mother decided to jump in.
"Then I see my daughter go under and I gotta save her, she’s my life,” said Carolyn Fischer. “I got her up once she got air, then mom came up and mom went down again. It was like are we ever gonna get ‘em up and then Sheryl hollered for Eunis to give us the life preserver.”
Eunis Rodriguez was still on the sidelines because she can’t swim, but she was holding the equipment that put a safe end to the entire ordeal.
"It all seemed like a big ball of people were just drowning, that was the hard part. I felt helpless, the only thing I could think was throw this thing in and not make the matter worse."
The mother and daughter swallowed some water, but were otherwise okay. Police said at one point there were six people in the pool, three of whom could not swim.
"I'm 70 years old and I can still swim,” said Carolyn.
"It was really crazy and very scared, but everyone made it okay,” said Lindsay.
As many head to pools this holiday weekend, safety experts want us to remember a few important tips. "Ensuring that they're wearing their personal floatation devices, adult within arms reach and make sure that happens especially around kids and also a life vest as well as swimming tools if you need to reach out and help save someone,” said Brent Jensen with the American Red Cross.
Swimming in a lake or river comes with a whole other set of risks. Safety experts recommend you always use caution. If you're in a boat, wear a life jacket and never swim alone.
