For the past 23 years, Omaha Public Power District and the American Red Cross have been partners in providing a utility assistance program to area residents.

Nebraska residents in 13 counties, including the Omaha metro, who need help with their utility bills are encouraged to set up an appointment to see if they qualify for assistance.

The OPPD / American Red Cross Energy Assistance Program provides financial assistance to residents of Burt, Cass, Colfax, Dodge, Douglas, Johnson, Nemaha, Otoe, Pawnee, Richardson, Sarpy, Saunders and Washington counties. Last year 1,014 families in these counties received $265,000 in financial assistance with help from the program.

The Energy Assistance Program is administered by American Red Cross and assisted by other community partners. It's paid for by voluntary contributions from OPPD customers and proceeds from the sale of advertising in the OPPD customer newsletter, Outlets. The United Way also provides support to the Heartland Chapter for all energy related programs and services.

Assistance is available once per calendar year and is limited to $300 per household. Priority is given to persons of age 62 years of age or older, those suffering from serious medical conditions and those who have recently suffered a financial crisis such as a sudden lose of employment through no fault of their own.

Customers must have also made three regular payments in the last six months. Customers are not required to have a notice of shut off to qualify.

Anyone needing assistance should call (402) 343-7755 to schedule an appointment or-1-888-890-9569 if they live outside of the Omaha metro area. Spanish speaking customers can call (402) 343-7711 to apply for assistance.
