More than 40,000 people are expected at Memorial Park Friday evening for the annual free Bank of the West Concert. Last year's concert was canceled due to a powerful storm that blew through just before the show. Kool and the Gang never made it to the stage.
This year, The Guess Who and Grand Funk Railroad are all set to go, the show starting at 6 p.m. A chance of showers and the heat were the only real concerns this year, ones that didn’t scare concert-goers away.
An estimated crowd of 40,000 showed up, some showing up as early as 5 a.m. to secure a good spot.
"We get here early. We like to hear them set up and do their sound checks and everything," says Dave Boggs of Omaha. “And to get a nice spot. We moved down a little closer this year. We're getting older, so we've got to see better,” he adds with a laugh.
The Boggs showed up at 5:30 a.m. "I've got a book. I've got my IPod,” says Dave. “Take a nap every once in a while. Try and stay out of the sun."
His wife says they came prepared, bringing "lots of water, because it's supposed to be very, very hot."
They've been concert regulars for the past decade and love it. The appeal, says Judy, “Just being out in the air, the people, and our family comes. You just have a good time."
Dave adds, "Yeah, yeah, we take a vacation day, make sure and get a vacation day in and make a complete day of it."
The day last year, though, was cut short by stormy weather, an event the Boggs won't soon forget. "It started looking real threatening, and they came and said clear out of here, go to your cars and so we did,” says Judy.
"We just figured, oh, a little bit of rain. We saw some hail coming down," Dave adds.
Blankets and belongings were scattered by wind gusts nearing 80 miles an hour. "We sat in our van and watched the trees come down beside us, just missed our van. But we were okay,” Judy says.
They came prepared for anything this year, Judy says. "We got our umbrellas. We've got our van. It's parked back there if we need to go sit in it."
The evening will cap off with a fireworks show at 10 p.m. And for the third year in a row, the event is also helping the Omaha Food Bank. Concert-goers are asked to bring non-perishable food donations or buy teddy bears for $5 a piece, to benefit the Food Bank.
