Aplington-Parkersburg High School officials say athletic director Ed Thomas has been shot in the school's weight room.

Sue Muller, the district's board secretary, says Thomas was airlifted to a hospital.

Muller says it's her understanding a suspect has been caught. She doesn't know who the person is but doesn't believe it's a student.

The district's superintendent and a guidance counselor are meeting with students who were in the weight room at the time of the shooting.

Thomas is also the school's football coach, and Muller says he runs a program during the summer for students, not just members of the team.

The school is in Parkersburg, about 80 miles northeast of Des Moines.
