With temps flirting with 90 and high humidity on Wednesday, many were feeling the heat; and the Red Cross is once again preparing to help those in need when it comes to cooling down.
A truckload carrying 500 fans arrived at the Red Cross's Heartland Chapter Wednesday morning. They were purchased by Nebraska’s Health and Human Services through a federal energy assistance fund. Last year the Red Cross distributed 400 fans to Douglas and Sarpy county residents, and this year the number is expected to go up.
"We'll see lots of families with young children, and also we will see a lot of elderly people. The run on the fans comes with the heat, so if it's hot and humid, people will start coming out," says Tina Price, Heartland Chapter CEO.
The fans are available on a first come, first serve basis. Photo Identification with an address on it must be provided by people who are in need.
The Red Cross is seeking donations, fans must be new and in a box. Monetary donations to purchase fans are also being accepted. For more information go to the Red Cross Web site or call 402-343-7700.
