Two Widows Pay Dearly

A knock on the door was costly for two Omaha widows. Both say strangers said their homes needed repairs. Now relatives and the Better Business Bureau say the women paid way too much for the work done.

An 85 year old widow tells Six On Your Side, “They knocked on the door and said I needed work done around the house.”

That included spraying an unknown substance on her siding, repairing her deck, installing leaf guards and deck steps. The final cost totaled almost $15,000. Grandson Chris Eich says” She paid $15,000 and we’re going to have to repair their work.”

The widow didn’t call relatives before signing a work agreement.
The widow says, “I wish I would have called them and consulted with them before I wrote out any checks.”

Her son Richard Eich says, “She didn’t want to tell me about it because she realized they had taken her for allot of money.”

The woman wrote the workers four checks, three to a man named Frank Winans. He has not yet returned a call to Six On Your Side. Another worker named Patrick Fuller did answer and says, “I was waiting to receive a notice from the Better Business Bureau so I’d rather speak with them before I speak with you.”

The BBB has questions about fuller’s work at another widow’s home. The 87 year old woman paid nearly $6,500 for home repair work that a BBB expert estimate is worth $300.

Both widows filed police reports.
