87 Year Old Widow Rip Off Victim

An 87 year old widow paid too much for very little work on her house and driveway.

The woman is fearful of the repairman that knocked on her door. She asked not to be identified. She tells Six On Your Side that at first she made a check for $64.50. Then the repairmen said that was incorrect. It should be $6,450.

The Better Business Bureau brought home repair expert Bob Polinko to look at the work.

Polinko first inspected the seal on driveway cracks. He said, “It didn’t do anything to help the cracks. They’re not covered, not sealed, it’s a big mess.”

The three man crew that did the work also painted the widow’s chimney and installed a small vent cap.

The home repair expert estimates a work to be worth about $300. Again, the widow paid $6,450.

Jim Hegarty President of the Better Business Bureau says, “These are all signs of somebody working the neighborhood trying to take advantage of seniors.”

The 87 year old victim tells Six On Your Side, “I don’t know why I never thought to realize they would take the money and run and they did.”
Her check was cashed within minutes of the crew leaving.

Neighbors say the men drove a white truck with a small basket boom. It had no markings and nobody caught any details on the license plate.
The victim has filed a police report.

A World World II veteran of the Women’s Army Corps, the 87 year old says she survived months of bombing in England. Now she’s seeking shelter from strangers knocking on her door.

She says, “I’m not answering the door any more.”
