In the last week, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed 14 new cases of H1N1. That brings the total number of confirmed cases in the state to 43 residents.

"The surge in cases is due to the holiday weekend," said Dr. Joann Schaefer, Chief Medical Officer. "I expect that we'll have cases throughout the summer. Next fall, when the regular flu season arrives, we'll see whether cases of novel H1N1 increase."

Eight probable cases are pending confirmation.

Here's the breakdown in the metro of new cases: Four are Douglas County residents. All are female -- two are in their 20's, one in her 30's and one in her 50's.

Platte County in the Columbus area has three new cases -- two of them are males between the ages of 5-18.

Madison County in the Norfolk area has five new cases. One of them is a girl who is between the age of a few weeks and 4-years old.

Experts say that if you are moderately to severely ill with a cough, sore throat, fever and body aches -- call your physician. There is medicine that can ease the symptoms if caught in time and possibly shorten the time you're sick.
