With the Memorial Day weekend now in our review mirror, the unofficial start of summer has arrived. Whether it's a work commute or vacation, travel through the metro could be a slow go due to construction.
At Bigwheels 2 Butterflys at Highway 370 and 72nd Street, there is a new sign out front, but it isn't an advertisement. “It’s just started, but it's just the beginning, I know it's going to get really bad," says Velda Beaty.
She along with others who commute along Highway 370 can expect to be in one lane of traffic this summer. Crews will be repairing a stretch of Highway 50 into Bellevue.
"We're just getting a little bit of roughness with the pavement, the panels are starting to shift on us a little bit, that just comes with age and the amount of traffic," says Tim Weander of NDOR.
Weander says another place to expect slow traffic is the South Omaha Bridge where a two-year project is nearing the end. Crews will close the old bridge for good in September so they can connect the new one to L Street.
Iowa is the lead in building the bridge along I-80. If things go as planned, Nebraska will use stimulus money to extend five lanes of traffic to connect with 13th Street.
The city of Omaha will be busy, too. Along Dodge Street in front of UNO, road work begins to repair buckling after a water line break in March.
"We have advertised and bid our first resurfacing contract and that will begin in June and Dodge is one of the first ones we'll be doing," says Tim O’Bryan of Omaha Public Works.
While it may take longer to get where you're going, Beaty says that's not always bad for business. "One thing that might help us though is if people are tied up in traffic and they notice that we're here."
The South Omaha Veterans Memorial Bridge is scheduled for completion before the College World Series in 2010.
