NE Set To Become 16th State To Go Smoke Free
A statewide smoking ban takes effect on June 1, barring smoking in indoor public places and workspaces.
Exemptions to the ban include up to 20 percent of hotel rooms, tobacco-only retailers, facilities that do research on the health effects of smoking and private residences.
Also, a bill signed last month by Gov. Dave Heineman exempts cigar bars. But only cigars, not cigarettes, could be smoked there. That exemption doesn't go into effect until September.
Nebraska's chief medical officer, Dr. Joann Schaefer, says the smoking ban will improve the health of all Nebraskans.
A recent survey from the state Department of Health and Human Services says 80 percent of Nebraskans support the ban.
