Children's Hospital and Medical Center took delivery Monday of a 13,000 pound magnet that is the heart of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine. The magnet is so large it took a crane and a crew of nearly a dozen workers to hoist it onto the deck of a parking garage.

From there the magnet was moved on a special cart to the room where the machine will be constructed.

The process was more than 9 months in planning. It will take a few more weeks before the $2,000,000 machine is put into service. The hospital expects to have it up and running the second week in June.

MRI is used to provide very clear and detailed pictures of the body's internal workings such as the brain, heart and circulatory system, and it's all done without radiation.
