One woman was killed and another injured in a cart accident at the Tiburon Golf Club in Sarpy County Sunday morning.

The two women were riding on the golf course near 168th and Cornhusker just after midnight when they hit a culvert near the first green, overturned and struck a metal pipe.

The impact ejected 60-year-old Debbie Deines and the cart and all its weight fell on top of her. She was taken by helicopter to Creighton University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. The other woman was treated for her injuries and is recovering at home.

It's unclear what the women were doing out at that hour. Channel 6 News spoke with the injured woman. She declined to comment.

"She was the most loyal friend, she was so full of life,” said Kris Halbersleben, who had known Deines for more than 30 years. The two taught together at Northwest High School in Omaha before Deines retired five years ago after 25 years.

"Her mother called me early this morning and my initial reaction was, I can't believe it," said Halbersleben. "Horrible accident. I just think about the family and friends that she leaves behind."

"The first deputy on scene reported that lifesaving measures were taking place,” said Mike Erhart with the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Department.

"We've had an accident reconstructionist go out. A crime scene tech came out and then all the reports will be forwarded to the county attorney's office and they'll take it from there.”

Deines lived nearby. She is survived by her husband Jerry and their two sons.
