Investigators with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Department are still hoping someone will step forward with information on an Underwood burglary. It happened April 20th, while the family was attending the funeral of a close family member.

"We had just buried my husband's brother,” says Shelly Jager. “It was the day of his funeral. He died the 15th from pancreatic cancer." Donald Jager Junior's obituary was in the newspaper.

"There's a lot of low in life, but it doesn't get any lower than that, to prey on grief.” Shelly says their caller ID showed the thieves even dialed the house from a pay phone just minutes before the funeral, to make sure nobody picked up. The call came in at 12:44pm.

Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Department deputies traced the number to a Council Bluffs' U-Stop, located at Sherwood Drive and Highway 6. A black car was caught on surveillance video at the time the call was made. Sargeant Dwayne Riche says at least two people were in that car, possibly three.

So far, a photo of that car released, shown in the story which aired Tuesday on Channel 6, has netted no new tips.

Sometime after making that call, the thieves showed up at the home and entered through the back door, helping themselves to anything they wanted.

"All these drawers were pulled out and everything just thrown on the ground," says Shelly. Taken were video game systems, hunting gear and family heirlooms.

“You know the other thing that was taken that was so very, very personal was our wedding rings and my mother's wedding ring, who has been gone for 10 years. Those things are truly irreplaceable."

Mixed in with the jewelry were her babies' hospital bands. "And there's no money value to them. But it's the only bracelet I'll ever have from when they were born."

Shelly adds, "It just kind of takes your breath away, especially after being at a funeral and realizing that you were preyed on from grief."

Investigators say a few other rural homes were recently targeted. "Have another friend, someone that you would trust, house sit these residences while you're at the services,” says Sgt. Riche.

Shelly hopes by sharing her story, more people will offer that help to families who've suffered a loss. "Help people think of the unthinkable at a time like this, so you don't come home from a funeral and have grief on top of grief."

Deputies have been in contact with area funeral homes to try and monitor when services are going on. Anyone with information on the burglaries is asked to call (712) 890-2200.
