With layoffs and job loss making headlines, many are looking at alternative ways to earn a living. Instead of going to work, some are opting to work from home.
Fresh baked goods and a few snacks, at first glance it may be hard to believe A.J. Sanford is getting ready for work. "I've been able to meet some wonderful people and the lady I work for is just an absolute sweetheart. She's been able to introduce me to some other people and you know we're just kind of building this network of friends."
A year ago, she started a second job working part time from home selling jewelry for the Lia Sophia jewelry company.
"I try to book approximately four shows a month and with that it's about $800 a month additional income, so it's huge, especially in the times we're in."
Five years ago Lynn Hagedorn quit her job as a occupational therapist and became a consultant for the skin care company Arbonne. "National vice president which is the level where I am, the average income is around $22,000 a month and I was promoted to national vice president in 2005, so you can probably guess where it might be now."
Hagedorn says it's a growing trend. More consultants joined her company in January than in any other month. "I feel like people who would have always dissed us in the past and never looked at us are now thinking hmmm, maybe I should take a look at this."
For both women, the career change has paid in more ways than one. "Money buys you time, money buys you choices," says Hagedorn. "Like I said my life is completely different now. I am able to work this from home, being present with my family. My husband, who traveled a three-state territory and was never home is now home and we work this business at home together."
Both women say it takes real effort to succeed. "It's definitely for a motivated person, I am always running, I am always going," says Sanford. "It's an opportunity, but you have to work it like a business to get paid like a business," says Hagedorn.
For those who are interested in working at home, but have concerns about companies, Hagedorn has some suggestions. Check the reputation of the company through the Direct Selling Association at dsa.org.
Avoid companies that demand any money up front and and find out how long the company has been around.
