A school district's use of taxpayer money to offer college scholarships is being called into question. The State Auditor was asked to investigate.
Auditor Mike Foley criticized the Rising City school district's scholarship program. It offers up to $5,000 in college tuition to district high school students for doing little more than attending the school.
In a letter released by the Nebraska Attorney General, Foley says the district's use of taxpayer money to pay college tuition is questionable, but that no state law against it was found.
Foley says the matter could be addressed by a lawsuit or by a new law barring such expenditures.
