He's one of the most popular comedians in America and a huge Husker fan. So a Larry The Cable Guy performance at Memorial Stadium seems like a great idea, but the university isn't quite ready to start selling tickets.
Dan Whitney, aka Larry The Cable Guy, is no stranger to the state. The Pawnee City native wants to bring his show to Lincoln.
"I think that would be exciting,” says Jim Andreasen of Husker Hounds. “He's the number one comedian I believe last year or the year before. He's really got a popular group of people that follow him and I'm sure he'd get very good attendance there."
Whitney announced a July 4th benefit concert at the home of the Huskers on Monday during a nationally syndicated radio program.
"Larry's one of the most patriotic guys you can ever meet and he's great, Nebraska loves him,” says Scott Strunc of Husker Hounds. “He loves Nebraska, so it would be a great way to kick off the Fourth of July weekend."
The problem is the event hasn't been approved by the University of Nebraska. Athletic Director Tom Osborne released a statement Tuesday clarifying the position of the athletic department:
“In view of previous reports about a July 4th show in Memorial Stadium, we felt it is important to clarify the athletic department position on the proposed Larry the Cable Guy show. It is important to understand that all non-athletic events on campus are subject to approval from both athletics and UNL administration. It is not our normal process to discuss these issues prior to approvals being obtained and details being worked out. While we are willing to negotiate with Outback Concerts for a Larry the Cable Guy show, approvals have not been secured, financial details have not been discussed and program content has not been finalized. We appreciate the support that Dan Whitney has given the athletic department and are pleased that he wants to put on a show for our fans.”
Some believe program content could be an issue for the university. "I assume Tom Osborne would be concerned because he's pretty straight and narrow, but he can tailor the show based on the crowd," says Andreasen.
Larry The Cable Guy's publicist, Maggie Houlehan, gave Channel 6 News this statement Wednesday afternoon:
"We are currently working out the details with the university. We are very excited about this opportunity and hope to finish the negotiation quickly. This is something Larry really wants to do and offering tickets for $4 should make it an affordable night of entertainment."
"I think it would be a really cool thing," says Steve Byrne of Papillion. "He's done a lot for Lincoln. He's got the skybox down there. I think it would be really nice. I think it would be a good turnout."
UNL Associate Athletic Director Chris Anderson tells Channel 6 News that a decision on the July 4th performance could be announced in the next few weeks.
