Grand Island Independent Newspaper Cutting Jobs

The Grand Island Independent newspaper says it is cutting about 7 percent of its staff -- six full-time and two part-time jobs.

Publisher Don Smith said Tuesday that local and national companies struggling with the economic slowdown have cut advertising budgets, which in turn has cut the paper's revenue.

The newspaper is owned by the Omaha World-Herald company, which last week said it was cutting salaries 5 percent and suspending its 401(k) matches to employee accounts.

The World-Herald also said it was cutting 5 percent of its staff.

The Independent says it has more than 100 full- and part-time workers.

The World-Herald bought The Independent and another Nebraska daily, the York News-Times, from GateHouse Media last year.
